Challenger Division

The Challenger Division, established in 1989 as a separate division of Little League, enabled boys and girls with physical and mental challenges the opportunity to enjoy the game of baseball along with the millions of other children who participate in this sport worldwide.  The Challenger program empowers individuals, regardless of their disability, to form life-long friendships with their teammates and their volunteer buddies.  It is a “play for fun” league that enables these children to experience the joys of sport while participating in a team environment.

Great Valley Little League is honored to have sponsored a Challenger Division for over 25 years.  This program benefits children with special needs throughout our community.  Our Challenger team is a traveling team that plays other Challenger teams in the area from Boyertown to Kennett Square. Teams are comprised of players 5 years of age and older.  The Senior Division Challenger Division accommodates players age 15 and above (with no age limit).

Is there a cost to participate in the Challenger Program?

Great Valley Little League does not charge a fee for Challenger Division.

What rules are followed during a Challenger game?

Flexibility and adaptability are key during Challenger games. Little League provides all chartered teams with a rulebook that includes a best practices guide to operating a Challenger Game. Typically games are 3 innings long and last about an hour. All players play defensively and bat every inning.

What are “buddies” and what role do they have in the Challenger Division?

Buddies are individuals who assist Challenger athletes in the areas of batting, base running and defense, but only as needed. Often buddies are peer athletes who are participating in the Little League Baseball or Softball program. Read more on the responsibility of buddies.

What type of field are Challenger Games played on?

Challenger games are played on our premier Majors field and usually include assistance from Major Division player buddies and a game announcer so that participants can enjoy playing on the same type of field as their peers.

How many Challenger Programs are currently operating?

There are currently over 950 Challenger programs in 10 countries around the world. Over 30,000 athletes participate in the Challenger Division every year.   GVLL routinely has 1 or 2 teams for Challenger which is considered a large program.  GVLL also opens up the normal boundary restrictions to surrounding league areas who may not have a Challenger program.
